Virtues of Sadqah

Virtues of Sadqah

Sadaqah means to spend something in the way of Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ without the intention of receiving praise from the people, rather, doing it with the intention to attain reward from the blessed court of Allahعَزَّوَجَلَّ .
(Kitab-ut-Ta’reefat, pp. 94)

From this definition of Sadaqah, we have come to know that real Sadaqah is free from any kind of showing off and desires for respect and praises from the people, it is only done for the pleasure of Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ and for attaining rewards from Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ. There is another thing to remember, some people are of this opinion that they should give away worn out items or things of no use as their Sadaqah; this is incorrect and the opposite is true, people should give those possessions in Sadaqah for the pleasure of Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ which are excellent, best and most-liked, as it is mentioned in Blessed Quran:

لَنۡ تَنَا لُو ا الۡبِرَّ حَتّٰی تُنۡفِقُوۡ ا مِمَّا تُحِبُّوۡنَ
وَ مَا تُنۡفِقُوۡ ا مِنۡ شَیۡ ءٍ فَاِنَّ اللہَ بِہٖ عَلِیۡمٌ

You shall never attain virtue until you spend in Allah’s cause the things you love; and Allah is Aware of whatever you spend.

(Part 4, Surah Aal-e-‘Imran, verse 92)

Commenting on the abovementioned verse, Sadr-ul-Afadil, ‘Allamah Maulana Sayyid Muhammad Na’eemuddin Muradabadi عَـلَيْهِ رَحۡمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ الۡـهَادِی has stated: Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Umar رَضِیَ الـلّٰـهُ تَعَالٰی عَـنْهُمَا said, ‘Spending here refers to general and common spending, all Sadaqaat, regardless of whether they are obligatory or supererogatory are included. It is a saying of Hasan that the wealth & possession which is most-liked in the eyes of Muslims , should be spent in the way of Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ for attaining His Divine pleasure as the blessed verse refers to this possession even if it is only a date.

Sayyiduna ‘Umar Bin ‘Abdul ‘Aziz رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْه used to purchase sacks of sugar to give in Sadaqah. He was asked, ‘Why do not you give its price in Sadaqah’. He replied, ‘I love Sugar; so I want to spend the thing most liked to me in the way of Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ.’

صَلُّوۡا عَلَى الۡحَبِيۡب       صَلَّى اللّٰهُ تَعَالٰى عَلٰى مُحَمَّد

Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ Himself is persuading and motivating us to spend the things we like most in His عَزَّوَجَلَّ way. Therefore, with good intentions we should generously give Sadaqah & Khayraat instead of being stingy. As we all know that whatever we possess, is given to us by Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ. So spending what He   عَزَّوَجَلَّ   has given us will surely increase His blessings upon us; and on the contrary, despite having the ability, if we do not give Sadaqah & Khayraat, this could be a cause of depriving us of blessings.

Sayyidatuna ‘Asmaa Bint Abu Bakr   رَضِیَ الـلّٰـهُ تَعَالٰی عَـنْهُمَا   has narrated that the Revered and Renowned Prophet   صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم   said to me, ‘Do not withhold your money, for if you did so Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ would withhold His blessings from you.’

(Sahih Bukhari, Kitab-uz-Zakah, vol. 1, pp. 483, Hadis 1433)

Not to spend in the way of Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ to be stingy and hoarding money, turning our faces away from those who are genuinely needy & destitute are all actions that invite deprivation for one’s self. Because it is a privilege to spend Sadaqah & Khayraat in the way of Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ ; if we would not perform this charitable act then Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ will choose others for this blessed act.
Remember! As spending in the way of Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ is beneficial to one’s self, similarly being stingy is also harmful to one’s self. Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ chooses His generous bondsmen to do good deeds. Those who are exceedingly generous and give Sadaqah & Khayraat with incredible generosity, despite spending a lot, their possessions are surprisingly multiplied; and on the other hand, a miser, especially one who has much wealth feels that if he gives Sadaqah and Khayraat then his wealth will decrease, this mentality prevents him from discharging his obligatory & supererogatory Sadaqah, other virtuous acts or helping the creation of Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ after all, he forgets that one day the angel of death approaches and his possessions will transfer into the hands of his heirs.

Consequences of stinginess

Sayyiduna Yazīd Bin Maysarah   رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْه   has stated: In some ancient Ummah (nation), there was a rich and stingy person who had an abundance of wealth and many children. He who would not spend anything in the path of Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ but would rather continue multiplying and accumulating his wealth. A number of slaves would always remain ready to receive his orders. Days and nights of that unwise and greedy person were passing in luxury, fun and complete heedlessness with his family, forgetting the reality of death. Once, Sayyiduna ‘Izraeel عَـلَيْـهِ الـصَّلٰوة ُ وَالـسَّلَام appeared as a beggar, knocked at his door. One of his slaves opened the door and saw a beggar standing outside. The slave asked the reason for his coming. Sayyiduna ‘Izraeel عَـلَيْـهِ الـصَّلٰوة ُ وَالـسَّلَام replied, ‘Go and send your master to me, I have to talk to him.’ The slave lied, ‘He has gone out to help a beggar like you.’

The beggar went away. After some time, there was another knock at the door. The slave opened the door and found the same beggar again. This time Sayyiduna ‘Izraeel عَـلَيْـهِ الـصَّلٰوة ُ وَالـسَّلَام said, ‘Go and tell your master that I am the angel of death.’ Intoxicated by wealth and heedless of Divine remembrance, when that rich man was informed about it; he began to tremble with fear and said to his slaves, ‘Go and treat him in a very polite and humble way.’ The slaves came out and humbly requested him, ‘Please spare our master and seize the soul of somebody else’. Sayyiduna Malak-ul-Maut عَـلَيْـهِ الـصَّلٰوة ُ وَالـسَّلَام said, ‘That is not possible.’ He then said to the rich man, ‘Make your will if you want, I will not go without seizing your soul.’ Listening to this, the rich man and his family yelled out. The wealthy person asked his family members and slaves to bring the boxes of gold and silver and opened them. Instantly they carried out his order. There was a stockpile of treasure that he had accumulated throughout his life. Turning towards the treasure, he then said, ‘O despicable and contemptible treasure! Curse be upon you! I am doomed due to your love. Alas! I remained heedless of the Zikr of Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ and the afterlife just because of you.’

Suddenly, a voice came out from the stockpile of treasure, ‘O lover of wealth, O seeker of the world and heedless one! Why do you curse me? Were you not despicable in the eyes of the worldly people! It is me that gave you respect, enabling you to have access to the royal court. You married a rich woman by virtue of me. You yourself wasted me on evil things. If you had spent me in the path of Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ you would not have been faced with this humiliation and disgrace. Tell me! Did I prevent you from spending me in virtuous things? Not at all! You alone are responsible for all the great calamity that you are facing.’ Thereafter, the angel of death seized the soul of that stingy rich person.

Three very important facts should be kept in mind when giving Sadaqah i.e. spending in the path of Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ :
Do not disclose or boast of your favours after giving Sadaqah.
Not to hurt the feelings of those whom you have assisted by taunting them
    3. Sadaqah should be given sincerely, solely for the pleasure of Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ .

For those who hurt Muslims by taunting, injuring their feelings by disclosing their favours and for those who have indulged in showing off & ostentation, they should remember the abovementioned three sayings whenever they are blessed with the opportunity of giving Sadaqah (charity), unless they are counted amongst those destitute people who will appear on the Day of Resurrection with loads of virtues but would end up with nothing.

Those who carry out the virtuous deed of giving charity sincerely in the way of Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ blesses them double (according to one’s sincerity) and even more than that. What we spend in the way of Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ as Sadaqah is in fact profitable wealth and whatever we possess will go into the hands of others as soon as we die. Wise people are only those who serve those who are genuinely poor, especially Deeni students, but without reminding & boasting of their favours and thus they become deserving of virtues and excellences as mentioned in the blessed Quran & Ahadees . Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ has a great reward for those who give Sadaqah and according to a blessed Hadis, the one who gives Sadaqah will not only remain safe from the heat of the grave but will also be under the shade of his Sadaqah. By the blessings of Sadaqah, misdeeds and calamities are removed; it is a source of increasing one’s age; it wards off the bad habit of arrogance; it gives protection from a bad end. Sadaqah becomes a barrier between Hell and a human and that fortunate person is privileged with salvation from Divine wrath .

How to Stay Safe from Difficulties?

How to Stay Safe from Difficulties?

Our society is surrounded by different illnesses and difficulties. People are suffering from unknown diseases which remain uncured even after being treated by expert doctors and herbalists. Frequent domestic rows have shattered peace in homes. Even qualified people are unemployed, miserably seeking jobs at different firms. Poverty is on the rise. Creditors are crying out for the recovery of their money. Debtors are burdened with heavy debts. Evils and new crimes are also on the rise. Indeed all this is the consequence of our bad deeds.
Difficulties and diseases are a part of one’s life. Therefore, instead of complaining about them and falling into the pit of disappointment, one should perform good deeds with sincerity, refrain from sins and get into the habit of doing the deed that protects against troubles, i.e. one should give Sadaqah.
Not only is the Sadaqah-giving person protected against calamities, he is also blessed by Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ with other benefits.
کیوں کر نہ میرے کام بنیں غیب سے حسنؔ
بندہ بھی ہوں تو کیسے بڑے کار ساز کا

Giving Sadaqah and helping the poor are liked by Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ very much. If a Muslim pleases the hearts of the poor by sincerely giving them Sadaqah and charity, so the Lordعَزَّوَجَلَّ Who bestows respect upon bondmen does not let him lose respect in front of anyone despite poverty. The Lord عَزَّوَجَلَّ bestows upon him even more than his expectation, as is just mentioned in the parable. Despite being a needy person, Sayyiduna Abu Muslim Kholaani رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْه gave the amount of flour in the Divine path in Sadaqah which was accepted by Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ Who turned wood dust and soil into good quality flour. In this way he and his family members were blessed with fresh loaves of bread. Therefore, while giving Sadaqah and charity, we should not also have such thoughts as ‘our money will decrease or what will we eat? Or we need money for such-and-such piece of work, etc.
Zakah, Sadaqah and charity are financial forms of worship. Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ enables those people to perform these forms of worship who have the passion to fulfil the needs of the poor and the needy. The people, who do not pay their Zakah and remain busy satisfying their needs and increasing their bank balance, perhaps feel that the way they are satisfied, in the same way the others will be too. Stinginess is a very dangerous disease.
Remember! Apparently, it seems to us that our money will decrease but in fact it will increase and we will be blessed with many benefits in the worldly life as well as in the afterlife. If we do not give Sadaqah fearing decrease in our wealth, it may remove blessings from our sustenance and may cause poverty.
Sayyidatuna Asma رَضِیَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَنْهَا has stated that the Holy Nabi صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم said to her, ‘Do not stop giving Sadaqah and charity in case your sustenance gets stopped.
(Sahih Bukhari, vol. 1, pp. 483, Hadees 1433)

The Holy Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم has said: Whoever gives Sadaqah for the pleasure of Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ that Sadaqah becomes a shield between him and fire.
(Majma’-uz-Zawaid, vol. 3, pp. 286, Hadees 4617)

Hakeem-ul-Ummat, Mufti Ahmad Yar Khan Na’eemi رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْه has stated: A generous person, giving Sadaqah and charity, leads a happy life and does not usually suffer from any worldly trouble. If he ever faces tests and trials, Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ blesses him with peace in his heart which helps him to have patience and earns him reward.

Sadaqah closes the doors of evils;

Sadaqah extinguishes the wrath of Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ; Sadaqah provides cure for diseases; Sadaqah is a means of protection from accidents; Sadaqah increases good deeds and wards off bad death. But regretfully! Despite hearing so many narrations in excellence of Sadaqah, we hesitate to spend our money on good acts. Perhaps this is the reason why each of us suffers from any type of trouble. Someone is facing domestic and family feud, while someone is stuck in social and financial problems.
We should develop the habit of giving as much Sadaqah and charity as possible for the pleasure of Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ. We should also have perfect trust in Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ hoping to be blessed with something better in return for our Sadaqah in the worldly life as well as in the afterlife.
Sayyiduna Imam Badruddin ‘Ayni رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْه has stated: Do not refrain from spending your wealth [in the Divine path] fearing that it will decrease. Otherwise, Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ will make you suffer financial deficit or will prevent wealth from reaching you and will deprive you of the means of sustenance. The blessed Hadees proves that Sadaqah increases wealth and is a means of blessing and increase in it. On the other hand, if a person is a miser and does not give Sadaqah so Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ makes him suffer financial deficit and will prevent blessing as well as increase in his wealth.
(‘Umda-tul-Qaari, vol. 6, pp. 410, Taht-al-Hadees: 1433)

Sayyiduna Ikrimah رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَـنْهُ has said: Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَـنْهُ narrated that the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰى عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم said, ‘A woman was about to eat a morsel. Meanwhile, a beggar asked for a meal. She gave the same morsel to the beggar. After some time, she gave birth to a baby. When her child grew a little older, a wolf took him away. The woman ran after the wolf calling ‘My Son! My Son! Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ ordered an angel to go after the wolf and snatch the child from the wolf (and hand him over to his mother) and say to her that ‘Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ has sent Salam to you and said that this morsel is in return for your morsel.
(Al-Mujalisah wa Jawahir-ul-‘Ilm, vol. 3, pp. 277, Hadees 3622)

There is another important point to be kept in mind. If a Muslim has been suffering from diseases for a long period of time or he has been in huge debts for many years or he often suffers loss in his business or any of his close relatives has died, Satan exploits the situation and whispers to us on these occasions. Satan may make us have the bad assumption about him, making us think that so-and-so person is suffering loss simply because he is a miser and does not give Sadaqah and charity. He feels uneasy and uncomfortable when it comes to spending in the Divine path. He even dislikes it.
We should also develop the mindset of remaining pleased with the Will of Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّinstead of complaining impatiently about the trouble, problem, illness and difficulty we ever face. For the solution of our problems and for protection from calamities, we should get into the habit of giving Sadaqah and charity in abundance for the pleasure of the Almighty. However, at the same time, we should also be careful that our Sadaqat do not go to any undeserving person. It’s a sad fact that there are a huge number of habitual beggars and so-called Faqeers i.e. destitute people. Instead of doing some work or job, these days, even some healthy people use begging as their means of livelihood.

Ramadan; The Chief of all the Months

Ramadan; The Chief of all the Months

A Gifted Month:

Being Muslim, we are so privileged that Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ has blessed us with a beautiful gift of month of Ramadan. The ninth month in Islamic calendar, Ramadan carries immense significance which cannot be paralleled by any other month. Every moment of the month contains immeasurable blessings and uncountable rewards. Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ multiplies the reward of good deeds in this month and forgives the sins of fasting person. The reward of a Nafl act is equivalent to that of a Fard, while the reward of performing Fard is multiplied 70 times in this sacred month.
Regarding the importance of Ramadan, one can find number of Quranic verses enlightening the significance of this sacred month. In the Holy Quran Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ Says:

Translation from Kanz-ul-Iman:

The month of Ramadan in which was sent down the Quran - the guidance for mankind, the direction and the clear criteria (to judge between right and wrong). So whoever among you finds this month, must fast for the (whole) month; and whoever is sick or on a journey, may fast the same number in other days. Allah desires ease for you and does not desire hardship for you so that you complete the count (of fasts), and glorify Allah’s greatness for having guided you, and so that you may be grateful.
(Part 2, Surah Baqarah, verse 185) [Kanz-ul-Iman (Translation of Quran)]

Virtues of Ramadan:

There are uncountable virtues of Ramadan. The first and foremost unique virtue of Ramadan is that Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ selected this month, in which the Holy Quran was revealed. Fasting in this month has been made compulsory. Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ has concealed a night, known as Laila-tul-Qadr in this month; in which the worship of one night is rewarded more than that of one thousand months. Moreover as the blessed and sacred month approaches, the doors of heaven are opened while the doors of hell are closed. It is a month in which the Satan is locked in the chains. The blessings of Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ are bestowed upon the Muslims. Besides, among the eight doors of the paradise, Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ has particularized a door namely Al-Riyan, which only fast keeping Muslims will pass through to Jannah.
The Holy Quran is not only the last revealed book of Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ but also contains complete guidance for the whole humanity. The process of revelation of the holy Quran lasted for twenty three years almost, but the completion of the revelation was done in this sacred month. Therefore the importance of this sacred month has been raised up.

The Month of Fasting

Fasting; the fourth pillar of Islam has also been made obligatory in this month. Fasting prohibits from eating, drinking and engaging in conjugal sexual relationships from dawn (Fajr) to sunset (Maghrib). It is such a worship which cannot be apparently observed unless it is declared by the observing person. Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ likes the smell emitting from the mouth of fast keeping person. It has been declared that for those who keep fast have two types of pleasures; One will be given at the time while he breaks the fast at the time of Aftar; secondly the pleasure which the fast keeping person will be bestowed when he will meet Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ on the Day of Resurrection.

A Night with Increased Rewards

The most important feature that makes Ramadan the month of infinite blessings is the Night of Lalila-tul-Qadr. It is a night that appears during any of the odd nights of the last Ashrah of Ramadan-ul-Mubarak. It is a night in which the worship is rewarded to uncountable folds. The worship in this blessed night carries more significance than that of worshipping one thousand months during other days. It has been mentioned in the Holy Quran that:
لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ خَيْرٌ مِّنْ أَلْفِ شَهْرٍ (۳)
Translation: The blessed night is better than a thousand months.
(Part 30, Sūraĥ Qadr) [Kanz-ul-Īmān (Translation of Quran)]

As the month of Ramadan approaches the doors of heaven are opened whereas the doors of hell are closed. Muslims prepare themselves for accumulating maximum blessings and mercy from Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ. Satan is locked in chains. It can be observed during Ramadan that many of the social evils like abusing; drinking alcohol, fornication, telling lie, misbehaving etc. are minimized. Tolerance level in the society is observed to be high. Masajids remain full of Namazis and reciters of the Holy Quran. Unity among the Muslims is strengthened during this holy month.

Itikaf, The Unique Worship:

Following the Sunnah of the beloved and the noblest Prophet صَلَّی اللہُ تَعَالٰی عَلَیْہِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ millions of Muslims observe Itikaf not only during the last Ashrah of Ramadan but also thousands of Muslims observe Itikaf during the whole month of Ramadan. They stay within the boundary of Mosque and remain busy in the worship of Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ. They seek forgiveness not for their own misdoings but also pray for the pleasure and prosperity of the whole Ummah. Also they convey reward to the deceased Muslims by praying and seeking forgiveness for them.
In brief it can be concluded that Ramadan is an opportunity for those who want to seek forgiveness; a blessing for those who want to seek mercy; a chance for those who want to accumulate the rewards for the day of Resurrections. Therefore, We Muslims must make use of this opportunity and collect as many rewards as possible. May Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ enable us to make use of the Ramadan.
